Nintendo Wii Console

The Nintendo Wii is the newest offering in the Nintendo line of video game players, which began with the original Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (Super NES) and then moved on to the Nintendo 64 and Virtual Boy. In a sense, Nintendo has been the creator of the modern home-based video game systems.

Nintendo launched its Gamecube (designed to compete with PS2 and Xbox) as a specialized gaming console. Nintendo has done it again with the Wii, which has been very successful and continues to sell well, with all ages.

In fact, Nintendo Wii's are so affordable and fun that they are being purchased for senior centers and assisted living facilities. Nintendo offers motion controllers which allow you to move the action onscreen by moving your body offscreen. So what this means, for example, is that you can simulate the act of skiing in your home, and your video game character will follow what you're doing in the game.

Think of it as like being able to control your character's actions by moving your own body. Senior adults are enjoying the Wii as a way to remain active and take part in their favorite sports, without the risk of injury.

This makes the Nintendo Wii a gift for children of all ages- and something the grandparents and grandkids can do together.

The Nintendo Wii is a good option if you want to feel like you're "in the game" instead of just watching the game. Nintendo emphasizes the fun in gaming. The Wii may also be a good option for parents who are worried that their kids are spending too much time playing video games and not getting enough physical activity. Now, you can purchase a dance game, or skiing game, for instance, and get your kids moving while they play. While not exactly the same as a full range of exercise done outdoors, it is, at least, a step in the right direction.

If physical activity games aren't your thing, don't worry- the Wii has you covered, with games in many genres, including fantasy, horror, and standard arcade type games.

Since the Wii is designed as a pure gaming console, it lacks some of the features of the Xbox 360 and PS3, both of which are designed to act as high definition DVD players and have a full range of graphics and extra media features.

Even without these features, W-i-i spells f-u-n.
